Pig sector debates AI, disease control and sustainability at ESPHM 2026

The growing role of data, technology and AI was the focus of discussions at 2026's European Symposium of Porcine Health Management.

The 17th European Symposium of Porcine Health Management (ESPHM) brought swine health professionals from around the world to Florence, Italy, from May 13-15 for discussions focused on disease control, precision livestock farming, sustainability and the growing role of data and technology in pig production.

The meeting’s scientific programme reflected many of the challenges currently facing the global swine sector, including pressure to improve production efficiency while reducing environmental impact and antimicrobial use. Topics ranged from infectious disease management and biosecurity to genetics, nutrition, welfare and emerging monitoring technologies.

Scientific presentations and poster sessions explored current research and field experience in porcine health management, with topics ranging from infectious disease control and antimicrobial resistance to nutrition, welfare and emerging production technologies.

Several sessions examined how data and sensor technologies are being applied more routinely in pig production systems, including approaches linked to health monitoring, reproductive performance and precision feeding. Discussions also addressed the practical challenges associated with implementing artificial intelligence and precision livestock farming tools on commercial farms.

Disease surveillance and control remained a major focus throughout the meeting, including work related to PRRSV, swine influenza, vaccinology and biosecurity strategies. Other sessions explored microbiome research, herd resilience and genetic approaches aimed at improving health and reducing reliance on treatment interventions.

Sustainability and public trust in livestock production were also recurring themes. Sessions examined circular economy approaches, nutrient management and the need for clearer communication around technological change and modern pig production systems.

Beyond the scientific programme, the symposium provided opportunities for discussion and collaboration among veterinarians, researchers, producers and industry representatives from around the world.

The next edition of ESPHM will be held in Rennes, France, from May 12-14, 2027.
