{"id":2925,"date":"2023-06-26T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-06-26T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/farmingfuturefood.com\/feb2025\/?p=2925"},"modified":"2023-07-10T09:20:53","modified_gmt":"2023-07-10T08:20:53","slug":"lasers-show-potential-to-simplify-soil-carbon-analysis-on-farms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/farmingfuturefood.com\/feb2025\/lasers-show-potential-to-simplify-soil-carbon-analysis-on-farms\/","title":{"rendered":"Lasers show potential to simplify soil carbon analysis on farms"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A compact technology which uses a laser to generate a \u2018plasma plume\u2019 from soil samples could offer a solution to the challenge of measuring soil carbon on agricultural land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A team based at Tampere University in Finland developed the mobile device based on the principles of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, or LIBS, with the aim of both measuring both total soil carbon content and where the carbon is distributed within the soil, through generating a 3D spatial model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To test the technology, they tested samples from 28 randomly-selected locations and at different depths, in a field cultivated with a red clover and grass mixture. They then validated the results from this approach by cross-referencing them against data from testing a further 167 samples using a more standard approach, the dry combustion method.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ready for carbon monitoring schemes?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They found that the device performed at a degree of uncertainty of around 10% \u2014 a level that the researchers say would make it worthy of consideration for incorporation as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/farmingfuturefood.com\/feb2025\/what-does-carbon-sequestration-actually-mean-everything-you-need-to-know-about-carbon-farming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\u2018carbon farming\u2019\">\u2018carbon farming\u2019<\/a> initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Current laboratory-based approaches for measuring soil carbon are time- and labour-intensive, they wrote in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0016706123002276#s0060\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">the journal <em>Geoderma<\/em><\/a>. In contrast, they reported a measurement time of one minute per sample for their own, in-field system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn addition, LIBS analysis can be performed on-site reducing the need of soil storage capacity and, as the calibration for a field block can be obtained from a small number of samples, the sample handling in laboratory is reduced substantially,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The approach can also be used to identify soil type, and identify micro-variations in soil composition, they added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A compact
